I often hear my clients, along with other people in general, say that their life no longer seems to have any meaning or purpose. They feel stuck, unsure of the next direction they want to take. Everyone appears to be so caught up in the every day chaos that has taken over the control panel of their thoughts, that they tend to almost be functioning on auto pilot. I think we’ve all been there at least a few times.
I begin asking them questions like, “What makes you happy? What brings you joy? What do you really like to do?” I’ve been amazed lately from people responding with “I have no clue?” Everyone has become so busy they’ve forgotten about the little joyful things in life that make them happy, or maybe they really don’t know what happiness or joy feel like.
When we start bringing more happiness and joy into our lives, it changes everything around us. Our personal relationships grow stronger as our own moods shift and we begin spreading joy to others, creating an amazing ripple effect. We become physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually happier.
The difficult part is, how do you reach this happiness and find your joy? While it is not a snap your fingers and everything will change overnight rapid fix, there are practices you can begin if you want to create some positive changes in your life. Here are a few ideas and suggestions to help you get started.
Compile a list of at least twenty five things that you like to do (even if it is eating an ice cream cone or your favorite candy bar. Those little things that make you smile.) Be sure to include a variety of things on your list, and enough items that you can easily pick one to do no matter how much time you have.
Make at least three copies of your list.
Keep one copy in your wallet or purse, one by your bed, and one wherever else you tend to spend a lot of time.
If you’ve had a rough day, pull your list out, pick one item, and treat yourself. The little shifts that you start to make now will in time create positive shifts in your life.
