Trauma-Informed Equine-Assisted Coach Training: Guiding Clients from PTSD to Post Traumatic Growth (PTG) | The Freedom Way®

Trauma changes people. It reshapes their thoughts, emotions, and even their connection to the world. For many, trauma leaves behind deep scars that manifest as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), making everyday life a challenge. But what if healing could be more than just recovery? What if trauma could become a stepping stone to transformation?

At The Freedom Way®® equine-assisted coach training program, we believe horses are profound partners in helping clients move beyond PTSD into Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG)—a state of empowerment, renewed purpose, and deep personal insight.

What is Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG)?

PTG is the process of positive psychological change that occurs as a result of struggling with trauma. Rather than remaining stuck in fear, hypervigilance, or emotional pain, individuals who experience PTG develop greater resilience, deeper relationships, a sense of new possibilities, and a heightened appreciation for life.

How Do Horses Help Clients Shift from PTSD to PTG?

Horses provide a unique space for trauma survivors to process, heal, and grow in ways traditional talk therapy often cannot. Their ability to mirror human emotions and their nonjudgmental presence create the perfect conditions for transformation. Here’s how:

1. Emotional Regulation and Nervous System Healing

Trauma affects the nervous system, often leaving clients in a state of hyperarousal (fight-or-flight) or dissociation. Horses, with their grounded energy and calming presence, can help regulate these emotional and physiological responses. Their large physical presence naturally creates a sense of safety, allowing clients to feel held and supported without words. As clients stand near or move with a calm horse, they often begin to shift from mental overwhelm to physical presence, attuning to the horse's steady breath and energy. Even simple groundwork exercises offer a rhythmic, embodied experience that helps rebalance the nervous system and foster a renewed sense of calm and safety.

2. Trust and Relationship Building

For many trauma survivors, trust has been deeply damaged, making it difficult to feel safe in relationships or environments. Rebuilding that trust—especially in a non-verbal, energetic way—is essential. Horses, by nature, respond authentically to a person's presence and intentions. This honest feedback allows clients to engage in relational experiences where they can practice setting boundaries, expressing vulnerability, and building trust based on mutual respect.

As clients spend time with horses, they also begin learning to read subtle cues in the horse's body language and energy—recognizing when a horse becomes uncertain, uncomfortable, or anxious. This process teaches clients to attune to the needs and emotional state of another being, while also reflecting on how their own actions and energy contribute to the interaction. Over time, this awareness transfers inward, helping clients identify similar feelings and signals within themselves. They begin to understand their own boundaries, recognize signs of stress or discomfort, and gain tools to advocate for their needs and communicate more clearly in their human relationships. What begins as a connection with a horse becomes a profound pathway toward relational healing and emotional empowerment.

3. Developing Self-Awareness and Empowerment

Horses serve as a mirror, reflecting emotions and internal states that clients may not be consciously aware of. Through guided exercises, clients learn to recognize how their energy, posture, emotions, and non-verbal communication influence the world around them. This heightened self-awareness fosters confidence and empowerment, essential components of PTG.

4. Reframing Trauma and Creating a New Narrative

One of the most powerful aspects of equine-assisted coaching is its ability to help clients reframe their trauma. By working with horses, individuals experience new metaphors for strength, resilience, and transformation. A horse overcoming an obstacle, for example, can symbolize a person’s ability to move forward despite past hardships.

When a person faces and moves through their own resistance or challenges while working with a horse, the lessons learned in that moment don’t just stay in their mind—they become part of their history and cellular memory. This embodied experience allows clients to not only know what to do but also remember how it feels to approach life from this empowered way of being, applying those same insights to other challenging experiences in their everyday lives.

5. Connection to a Higher Purpose and Meaning

Trauma can leave people feeling disconnected from themselves and uncertain about their greater purpose in life. Horses, as sentient beings, offer a grounding presence that helps clients slow down, reflect, and reconnect with their inner truth. Through meaningful interactions with a horse, clients often uncover insights about who they are beyond their trauma and begin to envision a life aligned with their values and deeper purpose. Many individuals who experience PTG describe a renewed sense of meaning, clarity, and direction—recognizing their trauma as a pivotal point that opened the door to a more intentional and purpose-driven life.

Important Considerations for Coaches

While equine-assisted coaching is a powerful tool for supporting personal growth, it’s essential that coaches work within their scope of expertise—especially when supporting clients with PTSD. Addressing trauma requires more than foundational coaching skills; it demands specialized knowledge in trauma-informed care and the ability to create a safe, structured environment for healing.

Coaches who wish to work with trauma survivors should pursue additional training through certifications, workshops, or collaboration with licensed mental health professionals. Horses are extraordinary partners in this deep healing work, but it is the coach's responsibility to be fully prepared. With the right education and skill set, coaches can help create transformative, ethical, and empowering experiences for clients navigating the path from trauma to growth.
